Jo Westaways Childhood Musical Memory: While I have many family - TopicsExpress

Jo Westaways Childhood Musical Memory: While I have many family related musical memories of sitting around the dining room table and singing to each other long into the night, the most significant memory I have took place in 1994. Mum had commandeered the lounge in order to watch the airing of Barbra Streisand: The Concert. It was a huge deal for any fan because Barbra had not toured in 28 years. On the condition that I didn’t speak, I was allowed to watch it with her. I sat riveted to the television in awe. Mum says that when that concert ended, I announced, “That’s what I want to do”. I took a cassette recording of the concert to my room that night and listened to it, memorising every note, vocal detail, word and speech. I did that for at least a year (clearly, I was not the coolest teenager!). At first I couldn’t hold Barbra’s notes for as long, or vary the tones as she did, but I persevered and it wasn’t long before I knew and owned every album I could get my hands on. This woman has recorded 50 studio albums….I own 37 of them. That night and that concert, are the reason I sing.
