Job Announcement Director of Public Affairs (1/2 time) The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health is seeking a communications specialist to both coordinate and help implement a project designed to reach the estimated 400,000 persons believed to have been exposed to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11 to inform them of the benefits afforded them under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010. This outreach program seeks to reach survivors (those that lived, worked or went to school in the area) and responders both locally and nationally, who are eligible for benefits. In addition, the job would entail publicizing and building participation in NYCOSH safety and health training programs. The Director of Public Affairs will be responsible for coordinating the work of a team of five;creating and editing material promoting the World Trade Health Center Program; tapping into communication networks of local and national organizations to disseminate program announcements; creating opportunities to outreach to this community with print and broadcast media; creating and maintaining a public website for the WTHCP. Candidate must be a self-starter and a team player and have a demonstrated record of press work. The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health is a coalition of over 150 local unions and 300 individual safety and health activists in the New York metropolitan area. NYCOSH provides training and education about workplace safety and health hazards to its membership, community organizations and the public at large and serves as a watchdog and advocate, monitoring government agencies with responsibility for worker safety and health. Responsibilities * Educational and Promotional Materials: Write and/or edit fact sheets and other materials produced by NYCOSH, NIOSH or other organizations involved in outreach and oversee production. Write, edit and oversee production of brochures, posters, flyers and other materials. * Dissemination: Disseminate information about eligibility criteria utilizing established local and national communication networks which include international unions and their local affiliates, community-based organizations working among the immigrant worker population, community boards, emergency and disaster response networks, national public health organizations, governmental agencies and faith-based networks. * Liaison with the NIOSH public affairs and graphic design staff. Liaison with translators (Chinese, Polish and Spanish). * Web Page: Create, maintain,update and produce materials for a dedicated page on the NYCOSH website as well as update and maintain the NYCOSH web site as well * Media Relations: Act as liaison with print and broadcast media. Responsible for promoting the World Trade Health Center Program (WTHCP) and NYCOSH health and safety training through press releases, press conferences, public service announcements,and through original articles published in both the labor and mainstream press. Also responsible for arranging appearances by NYCOSH board and staff and survivors and respondents on television and radio. * Social Media: Develop outreach programs using social media to increase awareness of the of the WTC Health program and NYCOSH safety and health training programs * Documentation: Document all activities and contacts as required by a rigorous tracking and evaluation plan. * Outreach for NYCOSH educational programs: Conduct outreach and build participation in NYCOSH educational programs. Qualifications Excellent written and oral communication skills. Skills in creating, maintaining and updating website. Must be computer literate; ability to work with and maintain database Excellent research and investigative skills. Experience working as a professional editor and writer,either for a labor or mainstream press. Familiarity with the labor movement, workplace and environmental health issues. Track record of placing successful stories. Salary Range: $33,044- $35,544 (50% of a full time salary) plus union negotiated increase; health and dental benefits; life insurance; pension.
