Job Opportunity!!! National Scholarship Office Graduate Assistant Position Description: The graduate assistant supports all functions of the National Scholarship Office (NSO) under supervision of the Director. This position will strengthen and grow the national scholarship programs at VCU—both for undergraduates and graduate students. The graduate assistant will work closely with students and recent alumni who are interested in applying for a variety of nationally competitive scholarships, fellowships, grants and awards. Responsibilities: •Coordinate the advertising and promotion of various national scholarships, fellowships and awards •Plan and lead information sessions to encourage interested students to apply for such awards •Organize the NSO presence at various fairs and other recruitment events on both campuses •Represent the NSO at various fairs and other recruitment events on both campuses •Maintain the NSO database and follow-up with students who attend information sessions or visit the NSO table at the various recruitment events •Serve as the primary point of contact for candidates for some national scholarships/fellowships •Meet with potential candidates to assess their interest and evaluate which opportunities might best fit their current studies and future plans •Solicit feedback from students and alumni who seek assistance from the NSO •Compile data for the NSO annual report; help create the report •Schedule weekly staff meetings and maintain the agenda for those meetings •Keep the NSO library of sample applications up-to-date and organized •Maintain the NSO library of scholarship materials for use at fairs and information sessions •Other duties as assigned Required Qualifications: •Strong empathy, selfless attitude, and enthusiasm for helping others achieve at the highest levels •Strong written and oral communication skills; comfortable working one-on-one and speaking in front of groups (both large and small) •Like to coordinate complex activities and build inter-organizational networks to accomplish tasks •Ability to keep multiple projects organized simultaneously •Comfortable working independently and as a member of the NSO/Honors College staff •Enjoy working under pressure, especially when facing deadlines •Able to learn new skills (computer, technical, etc.) quickly and train others Employment Period: August 2014 – August 2015; 12 month position, potentially renewable. (Must enroll in no less than 9 credit hours fall and spring semesters and 6 credit hours during summer 2015) Schedule: 20 hours/week, flexible between 8:30am-4:30pm, with some evening and weekend requirements Compensation: Tuition, stipend of $17,000 annually, and regular university fees (this does not include online course fees).
