Job Opportunity in Washington, DC: Education Policy The NGA Center for Best Practices seeks a motivated professional to join the Education Division as an program assistant. The Division provides information, research, policy analysis, technical assistance and modest financial support for governors and their staff in the areas of early childhood, K-12, and postsecondary education. The new team member will work collaboratively with the current administrative coordinator to provide administrative, organizational, logistical, and analytic assistance to all of the staff of the Education Division of the NGA Center for Best Practices. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Staff support – Provides support to Division staff to ensure compliance with office administrative requirements, including but not limited to: preparing expense or other travel-related documents for assigned staff; generating reports from the Services to States tracking system as requested; and managing the inventory of publications. Staff support will also include scheduling meetings for assigned staff as requested. • Meeting/Conference support –Provides support for meetings, including but not limited to: managing attendee lists; confirming travel plans; investigating catering and location options; confirming attendance; responding to participants’ questions; preparing meeting materials and managing mailings; providing on-site support for events which will require some travel; and performing basic analysis of meeting evaluations. • Project and analytic support - Provides project and analytic support to Division staff, including but not limited to: providing basic research and analysis; collecting and distributing information; maintaining an organizational system of tracking, monitoring and prioritizing tasks and projects; following up on details, in writing, on the telephone, or in person; and communicating status of projects to the appropriate staff. • Knowledge management – Collects and organizes documentation of events and activities of the division, including but not limited to: assembling exemplars of frequently used forms and documents; collecting meeting documents and organizing them for the NGA website; recording and disseminating meeting and conference notes; disseminating and analyze surveys; developing and maintaining a knowledge management system, and, identifying opportunities to share information within the Division. • Written communication support – Provides basic copy-editing support to Division staff. • Verbal communication support – Interacts with various outside parties, including governors’ staff, public and private donors, federal government officials, and other high level individuals. • Other duties as assigned: Assists with other duties at the request of Division staff. QUALIFICATIONS: Associates degree required. Strong preference for a Bachelor’s degree. Familiarity or strong interest in the education public policy/political process helpful, but not necessary. Must also have: • Strong interpersonal skills. • Excellent organizational skills, including systems for collecting and organizing information for others. • Excellent oral and written communication skills in an environment requiring diplomacy and good judgment in managing interactions with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization. • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Outlook, Word and web search engines. Benefit to have strong skills in Excel and Power Point. • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and meet deadlines in a role requiring attention to quality and detail. • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and for carrying out multiple assignments in diverse areas within tight deadlines. The selected individual will be part of the NGA Center for Best Practices Education Division team. The team is focused on key policy issues relevant to governors’ efforts to develop and enact policy and support its implementation, including: 1. Early education to 3rd grade access, readiness, talent, and quality; 2. Teacher/leader effectiveness and distribution; 3. Common Core State Standards, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), and related assessments; 4. Flexibility and competency-based learning and charter schools; 5. Postsecondary (higher education and workforce training) productivity, accountability, access, success, and affordability; and, 6. Finance, data, and accountability (including efficiency, effectiveness, and underfunded liabilities). The Division also works on policy issues related to bridging the system divides among the early childhood, K-12, postsecondary and workforce systems. Team members often collaborate on issues that cut across the various systems. This position is full-time, non-exempt. The position will require occasional travel.
