Job Opportunity in Washington, DC: Higher Education Projects Manager The Association of American Publishers (AAP) is the trade association for the U.S. book publishers. AAP’s national headquarters are in Washington, DC. It also has offices in New York and Philadelphia. The Higher Education Projects Manager will be responsible for (1) aggressively representing the public policy interests of higher education publishers at the state and federal levels and (2) for helping to educate public and academic policymakers on the technological advances and positive impact of today’s course materials. He/she provides leadership, advocacy, and strategic communications programs that will help further the Division’s objectives: To communicate the importance of high-quality, effective course materials to academic and public policy leaders. The Higher Education Projects Manager will report to the Executive Director for Higher Education. The position is based in AAP’s DC office, however, the Higher Education Projects Manager will be expected to travel extensively. Five or more years experience in government relations and/or public relations. Staff work on Capitol Hill or in a state legislature is preferred. Knowledge of post-secondary education policy is considered to be a plus as is knowledge of the educational publishing industry and the impact of technology. A thorough understanding of how legislative and regulatory issues evolve and the various means for influencing their direction on behalf of AAP members. Proven ability to effectively plan and promote an agenda at the state and federal levels. Experience in supervising the activities of lobbyists and public relations consultants, particularly from a distance. The ability to quickly prioritize, mobilize and coordinate government relations and communications activities. The ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. An articulate speaker comfortable with making speeches, delivering testimony before legislative and regulatory bodies, and making presentations to business, academic and other audiences. An accomplished writer. A bachelor’s degree in public policy, education, business or related field is preferred. Ability to use Microsoft Office programs is required.
