Additionally, Directors may focus on the business community’s role in conserving local energy and water resources and encourage necessary regulations. Financial Management Good administration is key to good performance and managing the chambers finances carefully and completely--including asset and liability analysis on its various activities using standard nonprofit accounting practices--is expected and necessary. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the Chamber Director to work with the staff and Board to create a comprehensive budget, develop financial best practices and manage the organizations funds using those practices and administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization. The Chamber Director is also responsible for tracking and approving expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board while ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local laws. Financial reports should be submitted on a monthly basis. In addition to keeping on top of the finances, Chamber Director must know how to comply with the many demands made on a corporation by local and national governments: the incorporation status must be kept up to date, forms and taxes filed and/or paid on time, property taxes, payroll taxes and so forth. Chamber Directors are expected to maintain a comprehensive grasp of the chambers financial relations such that they are able to provide thorough and accurate reports and answers to the boards basic questions. Fund Development Chamber Directors are responsible for engaging, supporting and educating the Board when applicable in effort to diversify, stabilize and increase funding for the organization. The individual needs to have a good feel (usually gained through experience, hopefully second-hand) of what creates liability for an organization. This knowledge should result in a thoughtful analysis of the risks the organization faces as well as an idea of how to mitigate these risks through perhaps appropriate insurance products, use of policies and procedures and so forth. The Director position is a generalist one; youre not expected to know everything, but if you need to know something, you must know where to go find answers. Human Resources Chamber Directors are also responsible for overseeing Human Resource functions, including but not limited to determining staff requirements and implementing human resource policies, procedures and practices. It is of great importance that the Director establishes and maintains a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.
