Job Posting / Call for Applications for a Part-Time Paid Grounded Theory Consultant An Interview Study of Patient Experiences: the NYU Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study We are seeking to hire a grounded theory consultant to join our qualitative research team. This is unique opportunity to get involved with research of the highest scientific quality with psilocybin, the active compound in a specific type of mushroom that has occasioned spiritual states of consciousness in religious and healing practices for centuries. We are conducting a qualitative study, interviewing patients with life threatening cancer who are receiving psilocybin as part of a Phase II study at New York University. This study aims (1) to understand patient processes of sense-making and the attribution of meaning within the context of the psilocybin treatment sessions and the psychoeducational sessions, (2) to explore the perceptual, affective, and psychospiritual components of patient experiences, and (3) to understand how patient perspectives on psychosocial and existential distress are addressed within the context of this novel treatment. Grounded Theory Consultant Compensation: $3,200 in total compensation is available. $30-$45/hour, although rate is negotiable and may be increased depending on the applicant’s qualifications and level of expertise. Time Commitment: Approximately 80 hours in total, over three to six months (fall 2014 to spring 2015). Must have expertise with Grounded Theory Method, including preferably a role as first author of a peer-reviewed article that utilizes a Grounded Theory approach. Must have completed a graduate degree or be currently enrolled in a graduate program. An interest in psychedelic medicine is preferred, but not required. Residency in New York City is preferred, but not required (we are willing to explore remote work options). Duties include: Provide expert consultation regarding the implementation of a Grounded Theory approach. Advise on the development of a study code book by reading, interpreting, and coding transcribed interviews for content in collaboration with study team members Analyze emerging themes in the transcribed data set Provide training in how to code the transcribed interviews using the study codebook Coordinate records of assigned and completed coding of interview transcripts Provide expert consultation and support through the coding stages and analysis of emergent themes Review written manuscripts and advise on the journal submission process.
