Minimum Requirement - Primary Experience : Must have four years experience in grounds maintenance, golf course greenskeeping, landscaping or other related experience. Education Substitution : An associate degree or technical training in horticulture or a related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. A Kentucky Certified Nurseryman, Certified ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Arborist or other trade certification will substitute for the required experience. Plans activities and supervises Landscape Gardeners in the performance of grounds maintenance duties. Prepares and grades terrain, applies fertilizers and pesticides, seeds and sods lawns and transplants flowers, trees and shrubs. Uses manual and power operated equipment. Works with Landscape Planner in locating and installing plant materials in new and existing landscapes. May cultivate flowers and other plants in the greenhouse as directed. Mows and trims lawns, using manual and power equipment. Trims and prunes trees and shrubs. Removes dead trees using chain saws, etc. Cultivates gardens. Keeps grounds free of debris such as litter, limbs and leaves. Irrigates lawns, flower beds, shrubs and trees using hoses or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler system. Inspects assigned grounds for nutrient deficiencies, detect insect, diseases and pest infestations and identify foreign plant growth. May use tractor or skid-steer loader equipped with attachments such as mowers, fertilizer spreaders, grader box and harrow. Keeps log of activities, maintains maintenance records and compiles periodic reports. Attends continuing educational sessions. Group : AGRICULTURAL AND WILDLIFE SCIENCES Characteristics of the Class : Supervises the activities of landscape gardeners and other grounds maintenance staff on assigned state properties. Insures proper grounds maintenance and horticultural practices are being performed on grounds; and performs other duties as required. Typical Working Conditions and Unique Physical Requirements : Work typically involves heavy lifting, bending and stooping. Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Operate power equipment and work with pesticides. Exposed to loud noises and sharp objects.
