Job Title: Haas Scholars Program Coordinator (Academic Achievement Counselor IV) #13979 Location: Main Campus-Berkeley Full time The First Review Date for this job is: June 8, 2012 Departmental Overview The Haas Scholars Coordinator provides individualized and group services to undergraduates, especially to lower income students eligible for the Haas Scholars Program who wish to take on a challenging research project as a part of their undergraduate career, with the goal of helping students succeed in designing, executing and presenting their independent research. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual research plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to successful research, and counseling on other aspects that may affect project completion and academic success. Includes the development of particular academic skills, primarily advanced research skills, time management skills, confidence in public speaking, experience in collaboration, and preparation for graduate programs. Designs and implements educational enrichment activities and community-building events to enhance student learning and satisfaction, as well as conferences to showcase student accomplishments. Also offers weekly workshops and guidance in finding mentors and research opportunities and in building research skills to the general campus undergraduate community. Responsibilities ADVISING Provides one-on-one counseling to lower-income undergraduates from all disciplines and colleges in: finding and working with a faculty mentor; designing and executing a sound research project; completing requirements of the Ctte for the Protection of Human Subjects; designing and managing a research budget; making progress reports; publishing and/or presenting research; preparing for graduate school and post-graduate scholarships. *Tracks program alumni; creates and maintains network of older alumni to aid more recent Haas Scholars alumni and current Haas Scholars. *On a more limited basis, assists general population of undergraduates with these same tasks. *Serves as advisor and budget manager for two undergraduate academic journals: Berkeley Scientific Journal and Berkeley Undergraduate Journal. PLANNING/IMPLEMENTATION OF ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT EVENTS Plans, develops and implements complex academic enrichment and community-building activities for the Haas Scholars: a five-day summer residential research retreat, fall weekly work-in-progress colloquium, and an annual two-day research conference in the spring. POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND INTERPRETATION *Plans, develops and implements the application procedures and the selection process for the Haas Scholars Program; interprets complex policy questions for consistent application over time; presents complex problems to Faculty Advisory Board for review. Makes policy recommendations. *Manages $100,000 annual research budget for Haas Scholar supplies and travel. Ascertains student financial aid eligibility and student payments. Monitors student research and academic progress. OUTREACH TO PROMOTE GREATER PARTICIPATION IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH, AND GREATER COORDINATION BETWEEN THE 50+ RESEARCH PROGRAMS ON CAMPUS *Develops and delivers general and customized curriculum for weekly research workshops that prepare undergraduates for participation in research via a variety of programs and departments. Includes general service workshops as well as workshops customized at the request of other research programs, programs to support particular constituencies (transfer students, disabled students, etc.), and particular academic departments. *Plans and implements outreach activities for the Office of Undergraduate Research: *Maintains database of research programs, in order to help publicize their services and deadlines via the undergraduate research web site and list serv. *Sends out list serv regularly to the undergraduate research list serv, undergraduate advisors, and research program coordinators announcing deadlines and workshops. Builds and maintains relationships with undergraduate advisors and research program coordinators to increase their knowledge and promotion of undergraduate research opportunities. *Helps update the research@berkeley web site, especially links to other undergraduate research programs on the opportunities page. Required Qualifications * Advanced degree, preferably PhD in social science or humanities. * Advanced fieldwork, archival, or laboratory research experience * Knowledge of various research methodologies, research designs and human subjects research. * Interest in working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities and first generation college students. * Outstanding interpersonal skills, both for working with students and for building relationships with colleagues and faculty members. * Experience in organizing events. * Openness to discovering and implementing ways to use technology to streamline tasks. * Ability to prioritize in order to simultaneously coordinate several complex, multi-step tasks involving many participants. * Comfort and experience with public speaking, especially teaching. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and effective advocate of undergraduate research to students, staff, and faculty. S/he will be able to encourage students, while also setting limits. S/he will manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, always searching for new time-saving techniques to maximize efficiency of administrative tasks. Preferred Qualifications * Budget management experience. * Experience with campus student systems (BearFacts, DARS, etc.), financial systems (DSAS, BFS, BearBuy, etc.), and applications such as Filemaker, Excel, Dreamweaver, Acrobat Pro, Word, InDesign, and Powerpoint. * Knowledge and experience in the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as assessment of academic preparation and personal competencies, collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and advocacy, conflict management and intervention strategies. * Experience in planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs/projects, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops. Salary & Benefits Annual Hiring Range: $57,000 - $84,000 depending upon experience.
