Lee, Provost Date: January 5, 2015 Position Summary: The Vice Provost for Academic and Budget Planning is the provost’s deputy for academic planning, budget planning, and institutional development. A member of the provost’s senior staff, this Vice Provost advises the provost on matters that arise in the provost’s dual role as chief academic officer and chief budgetary officer of the University. The vice provost oversees a group of two senior professionals and one administrative staff member who support the Priorities Committee (PriCom), the Academic Planning Group (APG), and the Fundraising Priorities Working Group (FPrWG), and who work with faculty and staff members to plan and build institutional initiatives. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Provost’s deputy for academic planning (30%) a. Advises provost on oversight and policies concerning the University’s academic programs b. Represents the provost in meetings and in correspondence with leaders of academic units c. Works with faculty members to develop proposals for, and with provost to plan and budget for, new academic initiatives d. Serves as a member of provost’s senior staff e. Oversees the business of the Academic Planning Group (APG) 2. Provost’s deputy for budget planning (30%) a. Advises provost on oversight and policies concerning the University’s budget b. Represents the provost in budget-related meetings and correspondence with leaders of administrative units c. Oversees processes that govern University-wide additions to administrative staff d. Serves as thought partner on strategic budget planning issues and improvement of budget processes e. Analyzes financial information from university systems, and provides information in support of decision-making and communication with university constituents f. Analyzes budgets in developing recommendations on requests, decisions, and issues as needed 3. Provost’s development deputy (20%) a. Collaborates with Offices of President, Development and Corporate and Foundation Relations regarding University priorities and projects b. Oversees and authorizes receipt of gifts for the University on behalf of Office of the Provost c. Reviews and revises draft gift instruments d. Makes recommendations on designations of unrestricted gifts for academic priorities (based on budgetary analysis of academic units) 4. Supervisor, budget & academic management group within Office of the Provost (20%) a. Director of Academic Management b. Associate Director for Academic Planning and Institutional Diversity (also reports to Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity) c. Assistant to two vice provosts Key collaborators and contacts: • provost • executive assistant/office head, other vice provosts, and office team members • vice president of finance & treasurer, colleagues in Office of Finance and Treasury • vice president of development, colleagues in Office of Development • cabinet officers and corresponding deputies • faculty chairs and directors, academic managers and budget officers Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: • experience in university administration at a top research university • excellent financial, budget, and management skills • strategic agility; ability to anticipate future consequences; broad knowledge and perspective • excellent planning and process management skills • strong core values and commitment to the University’s mission • ability to build constructive and effective professional relationships at all levels • ability to work productively as part of a team and to inspire teams as a leader • excellent spoken and written communication skills • ability to learn technical skills quickly Additional Qualifications: • PhD or equivalent strongly preferred • Direct experience in university-level research and teaching highly desired
