The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an innovative, pan-African centre for post-gra duate training, research and outreach which has achieved global recognition since opening its first centre in South Africa in 2003. AIMS centres offer a number of educational programs including a one-year taught Masters and MPhil and PhD degrees by research. Each AIMS centre provides an intensive and broad education to over 50 African students each year and prepares them for leadership careers in academia, governance and industry. The AIMS educational program relies on top international lecturers who teach in a 24-hour learning environment. Based on the success of the first AIMS centre, the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, nexteinstein.org) was launched with the mission of enabling Africas brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africas future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. As part of this network, the AIMS-NEI secretariat acts as a coordinating body for all centres. Within the context of an unprecedented mission and a pioneering innovative math and science education institution, AIMS Tanzania seeks to attract a dynamic professional to give leadership to the smooth and efficient operation of the institute as our… Information Technology (IT) Systems Manager AIMS Tanzania, is part of a network of post-graduate centres of excellence that provides a powerful foundation to the 24-hour learning environment which underpins the AIMS academic model. IT forms an integral component of the academic program as well as the infrastructure and services provided at the Centres. As the IT Systems Manager and in this start up role, you will ensure a fully operational platform with both proactive and responsive service to students, staff members and visiting professionals to enable optimal performance. You will be hands-on to manage all aspects of the Centres requirements including and not limited to: The systems administration and management of the IT network and equipment including servers and desktop, laptop and mobile devices as clients; The desktop and user support of students, resident and visiting academics and administrative staff; Working in conjunction and collaboration with IT managers across the network of centres and with the Secretariat at the NEI. In addition, you will collaborate with academic partners, in Tanzania and across the Network, to develop and share best practices to enhance and leverage the AIMS-NEI IT platform, manage and monitor the IT budget, bringing forward opportunities/recommendations to inform management decisions, and with designated network colleagues, develop and maintain the Centres web site. This is a 3-year, full-time contract opportunity based from Arusha, Tanzania. Do you have what we need? Bachelors degree in computer science/engineering or related discipline Minimum 3 years administering a server network infrastructure and computer lab environment for training or education Proven experience and ability to work hands on in a predominantly Linux/Ubuntu and Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) platform as well as Windows server and desktop operating systems Experience supporting users in an academic environment of students and lecturers as well as researchers Experience supporting IT infrastructure and equipment including servers, desktop workstations, laptops, mobile devices, network routers and switches, ups and to maintain cabling, trunking and related peripherals and utilities Experience with the administration of systems such as backups, resource utilisation, performance, risk and disaster recovery Ability to manage resource demand for internet bandwidth, and possible disruptions of electricity Ability to work under pressure English Language skills and working knowledge of Swahili is essential Experience in a Windows environment; familiarity with ACCPAC, MSQL Server, FOSS, LaTex and Google Apps, all desired advantages Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an innate ability to simplify complex information Logical analytical skills with an ability to think and problem solve independently Flexible to adapt to an evolving environment Experience working with an international NGO, an asset How to apply Are you ready to be a part of the transformation?
