Job posting - closes tomorrow. JOB OPPORTUNITY CLASSROOM TEACHER The Classroom Teacher reports to the Head Teacher on programming and to the Executive Director of Makonsag Aboriginal Head Start. The Classroom Teacher is responsible for applying a collaborative, team approach to the development and implementation of a teaching program for Aboriginal preschool children in accordance with the mandate of the Board of Directors; for the quality delivery of an early education program; and to meet the goals of the educational/academic component of the program focusing on both cultural and early learning. Responsibilities & Duties 1. Program a) Provide a stimulating, caring and culturally appropriate early learning and child care environment for children. b) Plan and facilitate school readiness activities with a focus on children who will be graduating from Head Start and entering Kindergarten. c) In collaboration with the Head Teacher, review assessments and intake information for new children entering the program. d) Ensure the environment of the classroom is welcoming and inviting to Aboriginal children and their families and reflects the role of the extended family in caring for Aboriginal children. e) Ensure the children’s play areas and toys promote healthy play and learning activities appropriate to age levels. f) Maintain an inventory of supplies for the classroom and ensure the supplies are replenished as needed. g) Ensure children are involved in the daily care, clean up and decoration of the classroom as appropriate to their ages and abilities. h) Provide guidance and supervision to volunteers, students and parents participating in the program. i) Plan and implement classroom activities to address group and individual learning needs. j) Complete weekly program and outdoor plans to be posted in the classroom and distributed to parents on a monthly basis. k) Encourage parent participation in the daily operation of the program. l) Administer, store and dispose of medications in accordance with the program’s medication administration policy. m) Plan and coordinate field trips in collaboration with the program staff team. n) Ensure the children are safely escorted to/from the bus. o) Ensure the indoor and outdoor environments are safe and hygienic for children in accordance with the Cleaning/Sanitation Plan. p) Ensure that all regulations of the Day Nurseries Act are met at all times. q) Ensure compliance with child/staff ratios at all times. r) Ensure compliance with Fire Drill and Emergency Evacuation procedures. s) Ensure all health, medical and safety needs of the children are attended to and documented according to all MAHS internal and external (applicable) policies. 2. Administrative / Program a) Maintain daily attendance records. b) Maintain a daily record of all parent contacts. c) Keep administrative and family files/binders in an orderly, confidential manner. d) Complete “Incident/Injury Reports” as required in compliance with program policy and procedures. e) Maintain an inventory of supplies for the program; order and purchase program supplies as required. f) Maintain communication through daily log. g) Prepare appropriate section of quarterly narrative report. h) Coordinate with team to invite speakers and community representatives/Elders to participate in classroom activities and field trips as required. i) In coordination with the Head Teacher, determine the need for/plan for changes in daily activities due to weather and other factors. j) In coordination with the Head Teacher, coordinate the field trip activities as required. k) In coordination with the Head Teacher, ensure parents receive appropriate handouts/announcements; respond to parent inquiries and meet with parents concerning their children’s progress as required. l) In coordination with the Head Teacher, welcome and orient parents and other visitors to the classroom. m) Ensure the gym, other rooms and other venues are booked for field trip activities as required. n) Operate, maintain and care for personal computer and peripherals for the efficient performance of duties. o) Stay informed of current resources and new approaches in the field and communicate these with the Head Teacher. p) Provide daily, weekly and monthly written reports (as applicable) to the Head Teacher and/or the Executive Director as required. q) Participate in the review and revisions of program support, health, policies, and individual education plans with the staff and Executive Director. r) Participate in annual or semi-annual (as applicable) Employee Performance Review and Planning Guide. s) In coordination with the Head Teacher, monitor and assist each child’s short and long term development through case coordination activities. t) Promote an atmosphere of caring, sharing, honesty and respect by: 3. Organizational a) Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, other meeting and/or professional development sessions as required. b) Attend MAKONSAG Board meetings as required. c) Assist in the planning and organization of the MAKONSAG Annual General Meeting (AGM) d) Comply with all policy and procedures of the MAKONSAG, including MAKONSAG Standards of Professional Conduct and Oath of Confidentiality. e) Demonstrate solution-based problem-solving and effective conflict resolution. f) Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of the children and families in the program. g) Participate in a team-based approach with colleagues at all times. 4. Children’s Progress a) Problem-solve and develop individual plans in coordination with Head Teacher, other staff and parents. b) Informally assess each child’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive learning needs. c) Observe, monitor and track each child’s individual progress and development in accordance with learning goals in the program. d) Maintain regular, ongoing contact with parents to inform them of their child’s progress. Respond to parent inquiries on an ongoing basis regarding their child’s progress or daily activities. Respond to parents through communications books (e.g. make a notation that there was and email or phone call about “X” on a specific date). e) In collaboration with all staff, help to identify children who may have developmental delays and assist families in assessing professional services and/or formal assessments as required. f) Participate in regular case consultations or conferencing as required. g) Maintain records and documentation as follows: h) Record daily observations of children’s behaviours/development in Log Book. i) Record/review messages regarding the children/parents from other staff. j) Record incidents/accidents according to procedural requirements. 5. Maintenance a) Keep the storage room clean and organized by: • Rotating toys on a weekly basis or as instructed by the Head Teacher. • Ensure the toys, games, supplies, etc. are stored in a way that is orderly, accessible and safe. b) Keep the outdoor play area and equipment safe by: • Clean and disinfect the playground equipment in the event of soiling by a child (or exceptionally phlegmy children). • Set up/clear outdoor toys on a daily basis and lock away in shed as appropriate when not in use. • Always keep the playground gate locked. • Clean/wipe the slide on a daily basis. • Other duties as assigned c) Keep the classroom and equipment clean, safe and orderly by: • Set up/take down classroom for younger and afternoon sessions, as applicable for the blended program (with some half day students and some full day students); clear toys, books, craft supplies and artwork between classes; clear tables/chairs and clean/sanitize them between classes. • Inspect toys daily for breakage to ensure they are safe to use. • Assist cook on Fridays with sanitation of all toys, as is applicable and in accordance with schedule set out by the Head Teacher. CLASSROOM TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS • CPR/First Aid Certification. • TB Test. • HEP-B Vaccination recommended. • Physical Examination (at hiring). • Police Record Check. • Ability to speak and enunciate clearly. • Physical ability to access three story building. • Early Childhood Education (ECE) Diploma or equivalency required. • One year experience working with preschool age children. • One year experience working with Makonsag or Aboriginal communities. • Knowledge of Makonsag culture and traditions. • Fluency or functional knowledge of an Aboriginal language is an asset. • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of Aboriginal children and families. • General knowledge of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community services and supports. • Computer literacy and asset • Ability to respond effectively to crisis situations. • Ability to work in a collaborative staff & team environment. • Ability to function effectively in a high stress, high noise environment. • Ability to plan and implement classroom learning activities based on curriculum. • Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication and commitment to children and their learning environments.
