Job searching on State of New Jersey Government jobs ASSISTANT SUPERVISING HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DEFINITION Under direction, assists in supervising and works with a group of employees involved in operating, checking, servicing and making minor repairs to the heavier and more complex construction and maintenance equipment; does related work as required. NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be listed. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assists in supervising work with a group of employees involved in operating the heavier and more complex construction and maintenance equipment such as a large bulldozer and/or power shovel and/or crane and/or gradall and/or large front-end loader and/or or large road grader and/or 10-ton roller and/or tractor trailer and/or clam shell used in repairing and maintaining streets, roads, drainage areas, parks, grounds, sanitary landfill sites, piping systems and/or other maintenance and construction operations requiring the use of heavy power driven construction machinery. Inspects the work of assigned employees, gives suitable assignment and instructions to assigned employees. Prepares and maintains records of personnel, and work accomplished, equipment and material used, and time spent on operation. REQUIREMENTS: EXPERIENCE Three (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of construction and mechanized equipment. LICENSE: Applicants may be required to possess a license as a Crane Operator issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and, a certification issued by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) in the appropriate specialty as determined by the Appointing Authority (lattice boom crawler crane, lattice boom truck crane, telescopic boom crane with a capacity of more than 17.5 tons, telescopic boom crane with a capacity of less than 17.5 tons). Appointees must possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey. Appointees may also be required to possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated. NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of procedures for operating heavy, complex, mechanized equipment in accord with the operators manual, safety regulations, and other instructions. Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and problems involved in driving well-mounted, complex, mechanized equipment. Knowledge of procedures, regulations, and problems involved in moving equipment and/or plows. Knowledge of the assigned equipment and its limitations in performing a variety of tasks. Knowledge of accident prevention procedures for operating assigned equipment. Knowledge of the methods used to maintain equipment in a safe operating condition. Ability to prepare a work schedule and develop effective work methods. Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and use needed equipment, materials and supplies. Ability to provide assignments and instruction and supervise work performance. Ability to prepare reports of maintenance and repair activities. Ability to supervise the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment. Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
