Jobs expected to grow fast in the near future BY DEBRA AUERBACH CAREERBUILDER Wouldn’t it be nice to have a crystal ball that could give you a glimpse into the future? While such fortune-telling tools may only exist in the movies, there is a way to envision what the job market may look like in the coming years. A new report from Career-Builder and Economic Modeling Specialists International did just that, by exploring occupational projections over a five-year period in the U.S. Matt Ferguson, CEO of Career-Builder and author of the newly released book, “The Talent Equation: Big Data Lessons for Navigating the Skills Gap and Building a Competitive Workforce,” says that projections such as these provide an important look at the future of the labor market. “[Projections] can be used to spot emerging trends that have implications for students and job seekers, as well as businesses and economic planners,” Ferguson says. According to the report, the U.S. workforce is projected to grow 4.4 percent from 2013 to 2017, a rate slightly faster than the preceding post-recession years (2009-2013), which is good news for job seekers. The report also found that certain occupations are expected to experience more growth than others, and at a faster rate. Many of these occupations are associated with health care or technology, and median hourly earnings range from about $10 to close to $48. Knowing which occupations have a bright outlook can help job seekers new to the workforce or looking for a change determine which direction to take their career. The following list spotlights 10 occupations that are projected to grow the fastest from 2013 to 2017: 1Personal care aide Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 21 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 273,898 2Home health aide Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 21 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 200,067 3Market research analyst and marketing specialist Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 14 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 60,889 4Medical secretary Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 14 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 76,386 5Emergency medical technician and paramedic Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 13 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 30,234 6Software developer, systems software Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 11 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 48,291 7Software developer, applications Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 10 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 61,758 8Medical assistant Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 10 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 60,109 9Network and computer systems administrator Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 9 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 34,825 10 Registered nurse Percent change in jobs from 2013-2017: 9 New jobs added from 2013-2017: 256,703 While no one can know for certain what the future holds, these projections show that the short-term job outlook in the U.S. is promising, especially for these fast-growing occupations.
