Johan Halvorson’s “Air Norvégien”, Op.7, was performed by Ashley Roberson on 1/5/2015. I once heard it performed by Marianne Thorsen (a Norwegian violinist) from WBJC (91.5 FM) on the way to work, and I loved it so much for its Nordic impression and mood that I purchased the CD and searched for it right after I came home. This was a piece that Halvorsen played frequently at his concert. It was constituted by a few melodies from Lindeman’s Norwegian folk-song collection. Ashley did a very outstanding performance as well in her own temperament; particularly in such a short time of practicing after Cantata and Christmas Eve services during the College Christmas Break. The opening: A combination of ‘St. Thomas-klukkelåten’ (The Ringing of the St Thomas Bells) and a ‘Huldrelokk (witch or temptress of the woods or mountains)’. Second part: The troll ballad ‘Åsmund Frægdegjæva (Åsmund the famous and skillful and full of honor)’ originated from Telemark. It was based on a medieval legend about the Norwegian hero Åsmund who rescued Irish princess Ermelin from prison by fighting Trolls in Troll Botten. Final: The halling (a type of Norwegian dance) ‘Underjordisk musikk (Subterranean Music)’. After a while of the trilling dance, it eventually came back to the first part of the rhapsody for a brilliant ending.
