Johan Kurver - Gold is protected because is traded and that comes with inherent guarantee that it carries value and can pay for security for itself . The same can not be said for horn, in a legal way... of course, for illegal trade it carries a lot of potential value, which is why state as well as rhino owners carry the unrewarded burden of storage and security... Further , it is my understanding that rhino owners cannot even give horn away as a gift, and in a country with significant attacks in rural areas like those on farmers constantly in the news... they carry all this risk on themselves... Simply further proof that trade is a reality and the only real choice is whether we want it to benefit the rhino with security measures and land, or whether you prefer it to happen off random brutal killing that includes cows and baby rhino ... in which case only organised crime and organised protest-and-rhino- saving organizations benefit...
