The entire piece--Brahms earliest accompanied choral song--is a double canon at the 9th, with the tenor following the soprano always exactly at the interval of the 9th, and the bass following the alto likewise, until the amen coda when the follower/leader roles are reversed. Ingenious and perfect mastery of strict counterpoint, and such deeply gorgeous writing otherwise; evidence of a first-rate genius and artist.
