Johannesburg - An outpouring of prayers and well-wishes for the speedy recovery of popular Afrikaans artist Kurt Darren flooded social networks on Sunday. This followed after Louis van Wyk, from Music Profile Management, confirmed that the 43-year-old singer, actor and television presenter was in a serious car accident at Kameelfontein in Pretoria at about 1.30am on Sunday. Van Wyk said while the singer was in the intensive care unit and experiencing “extreme pain and discomfort”, he was “out of the danger zone” and in a stable condition. His brother Darren van Heerden, who was first on the scene, said: “Kurt was coming home after watching rugby with his friend Marnus Bisschoff and assistant Nadia van Rensburg. “A vehicle approached them and was at the centre of the road in the direction of Kurt and his friends travelling in the vehicle. It was obvious that this vehicle was not going to dodge, and they were forced to swerve left and so the car rolled.” Bisschoff and Darren were airlifted to the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Joburg. Darren sustained eight broken ribs as well as multiple injuries and bruises, while Bisschoff sustained multiple injuries and a swollen back. Van Rensburg was taken to the Steve Biko Hospital, where she is being treated for leg and hip injuries. The musician’s mother, Cecillia May, tweeted on Twitter: “Praying for my son Kurt Darren @KurtOfficial who was in a serious motor accident last night. His condition is stable thank God!!” Among the dozens of well-wishers shocked at the news of the accident, @Danilo_Acquisto appealed on Twitter to people to “Keep him in your thoughts and prayers”. @Liyabona_M tweeted: “Kurt Darren is in hospital after a terrific crash. He is my favourite Afrikaner singer #PrayforKurtDarren.” On Facebook, Michael Doubell said in a status update: “Ons bid vir Kurt Darren… Hoop hy sal oky wees en baklei vir sy lewe (We pray for Kurt Darren. Hope he will be okay and will fight for his life).” Darren’s management team said he would be out of action for six weeks to enable him to recover, and that they were working on contacting clients to cancel scheduled shows.
