Johannesburg - Convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti, who owes Sars - TopicsExpress

Johannesburg - Convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti, who owes Sars more than R78m, has divorced his wife so as to allegedly prevent the South African Revenue Service from getting to all his assets. But Sars, which filed papers in the Pretoria High Court earlier this month to have Agliotti provisionally sequestrated, believes that should they be granted this, they will uncover Agliotti’s hidden assets both in South Africa and overseas, reports the Sunday Independent. Sars says that Agliotti’s divorce was simulated so as to ensure the Insolvency Act would not be enforced if his estate was sequestrated. In August, Agliotti said that Sars’ claims of him having offshore bank accounts were ludicrous. Last week he again dismissed such allegations. Agliotti owes Sars more than R78m for unfiled income tax returns and value-added tax obligations between 2003 and 2008. Agliotti was convicted of drug dealing and later turned States evidence against some of the accused in the corruption trial of former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi. Selebi was sentenced to 15 years which was later converted to medical parole.
