Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma’s efforts to try to save the investigation into South Africa’s controversial arms deal from collapse suffered another blow last week with the resignation of evidence leader advocate Tayob Aboobaker – two days after Judge Francis Legodi quit. According to the Sunday Times, Aboobaker threatened to quit the Seriti commission on Friday. In his resignation letter, dated 2 August, the senior counsel allegedly slates the commission for nepotism, unprofessionalism and infighting. “I cannot operate in an environment which is so suffocating,” he wrote. He also undertook to “keep confidential all the machinations which have led to my resignation”, but warns: “If I am pertinently faced with facts that impact upon my credibility or which impugn my character then I will have to respond.” However, when asked for comment, commission spokesperson William Baloyi claimed that Aboobaker had been asked to withdraw his letter of resignation. Baloyi said Aboobaker had duly done so.
