Johannesburg-Julius Malema called on the public not to judge the new party on the past social escapades of its member and businessman Kenny Kunene. In a media briefing on Thursday, Malema told journalists that Kunene, who is a member of a top structure of EFF, needed to be given a chance as an EFF member because he had publicly apologised for his “life of sushi and an army of women”. “Kunene is not the only person who leads EFF. To judge an organisation on one individual would be wrong. And the days of sushi are over,” he said. Kunene shot to the limelight in 2011 by eating sushi off bodies of semi-naked women in the full glare of the media, while celebrating his 40th birthday. His style of partying was condemned by Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe and the ANC women’s League. Malema has vowed that part of the EFF’s policy is among other things, fighting for the economic emancipation of black South Africans with Kunene on board. He said the movement would also advocate for the use of public medical facilities, instead of the private hospitals and clinics.
