John 14:24-26 The Holy Spirit Guided the Apostles For years, Jesus taught His disciples the truth concerning Himself and His purpose and plan for mankind. He told them He would die, rise again, ascend to heaven, and rule and reign on the earth yet future. Yet despite years of instruction from the Savior Himself, the disciples failed to understand many of Jesus teachings. Even in this text, only hours before His death, and only days before His resurrection and ascension, they did not understand nor comprehend Christs words. Notice, for example, John 16:17-19. They were confused and perplexed. How, then, could these fallible, ignorant men possibly become the dynamic leaders of the future church and the messengers of God to a needy world? They needed divine guidance! In todays text, Jesus informs His disciples that the Holy Spirit would teach them and remind them of all Christ had said throughout His earthly ministry. These disciple would soon serve as the New Testament apostles and prophets who would go forth into the world declaring the very words of God to mankind. Notice that the Spirits work was two-fold: He would teach the disciples as well as remind them what Jesus had said (v.26). The very words that the Holy Spirit led them to speak and write were God-breathed (2 Tim.3:16). In John 14:16, the word another indicates that the Holly Spirit is identical in nature to Jesus Christ (that is, He is God). Therefore. the disciples completely true (1 Cor.2:9-13). So, what does this mean for us today? We are assured that the Bible is not the ideas or musings of men but is truly Gods Word to us!
