John 14:4-6 Only Jesus In John 14:2-3, Jesus told the disciples - TopicsExpress

John 14:4-6 Only Jesus In John 14:2-3, Jesus told the disciples that he was leaving, but he was leaving to prepare a place so that when he returned, he would take them back to that place to be with him. Then in verse 4, Jesus said, “And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.” This was a little confusing to the disciples, especially to Thomas, who asked, “Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” Now understand, Thomas was asking this question, not because of doubt, but because he did not fully understand what Jesus had said. He was not going to nod his head in agreement with something when he honestly did not understand it. Thomas just wants some clarity. Jesus does not rebuke Thomas when he answers his question, but gives him the clarity he seeks. Jesus tells him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Jesus does not tell Thomas that he will show the way, teach truth, and give life. That is a category for icons of other religions. For instance, Buddha called himself “the way-shower.” Mohammed proclaimed he was a teacher of truth. Neither of them, through their teachings, can offer to give life. But Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Only Jesus can truthfully make that statement. Only Jesus can say, “I am the way.” He is not going to show us the way. He is the way. If we follow him we will know the way. Anyone can show you the way, but yet, you can still get lost. If Jesus is the way in your life you will never be lead astray. Only Jesus can say, “I am the truth.” Many have professed to have found truth, only to learn that what they found was counterfeit and unreliable. The Greek word for truth, “aletheia,” has a double meaning. One definition is “truth as distinguished from falsehood”, while the other definition is “that which is real or genuine.” When we put this altogether, we see that Jesus is someone we can completely and totally rely on. We learn that He is the embodiment of what is real. We realize that He is truth. Only Jesus can say, “I am the life.” Many have said that they have found the true meaning of life. They found it through a book or spending hours in a room, sitting cross-legged, humming. Thing about that is, some other new spiritual enlightening movement will come along and they will jump to that. If the world wants to truly live a life of spiritual joy and freedom, all it has to do is follow Jesus as the way and accept him as the truth. Then they will truly have life. The world is a corrupt and confusing place. Every day we face situations where we need clarity. There are many different religions that offer understanding and enlightenment. But they cannot make the statement Jesus made in verse 6. Only Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
