John 15:13: Greater love no one has than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. In every society, there are many callings; teacher, caregiver, statesman…Of these, the path of the Warrior is one of the more difficult. It is the hardest of the paths of service to God, others, and the community. William Havard once said, “The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children.” Throughout history, Warriors have been called upon to protect their families, communities and countries to fight for others safety and freedom – Knowing that this path of service may include their life and the suffering of their loved ones. The path of Warrior requires the qualities of courage, commitment, integrity, and resilience. It requires the courage to face the horror and brutality of war. It requires commitment to leave your loved ones behind to make sure they will remain safe for future generations that will come long after the Warrior is gone. It requires resilience to keep your humanity in the face of inhumanity. It requires you to reconcile the horizontal and the vertical of the cross in which Jesus died by killing those who do harm to others without regard for humanity. Politics and public opinions flow like the ocean’s tide, but the path of the Warrior is steadfast. He understands duty, honor, and sacrifice. No one desires peace more than the Warrior and his or her family…for only they know the true cost of war. As Douglas Macarthur so eloquently stated, The Soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” They KNOW that freedom has never been free and the price of this freedom has always been the blood of the Warrior. These Warriors have never sought war, but have never flinched when their country called. Memorial Day…and every day is the day when we pay or should pay our respects to those who, in Abraham Lincoln’s words, “gave the last full measure of devotion” to something that deep inside knew was much greater than themselves. It is through their actions that we enjoy the blessings of liberty in this Constitutional Republic. It is through the tears of their families that we have the freedoms that we often take for granted. Remember them today, and every day…for this is the cross that the Warrior chose to bear. Thank you to Humanityhealing for providing this.
