John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus - TopicsExpress

John 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. The Bible is used for a lot of different things. For some it is a debate book, as they love to banter about different viewpoints concerning theology, prophecy, or interpretation. Other use the Bible for inspiration, pulling from its pages different passages and quotes which comfort the soul. Still others use the Bible as a showpiece, carrying it around; spouting scriptural trivia; all meant to impress others. The Bible has been used as a movie script, paper weight, textbook, a teaching manual, and the list could go on. The apostle John lays out the most concise purpose of scripture is stating his reason for writing the book of John. 1. “These things were written”: All the history, all the stories, all the prophesies; all the ethical teaching, all the doctrinal dispositions, everything was given by God to us for a purpose. 2. “that you may believe”: Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. As we gain knowledge of scripture, we are to increase in our capacity to believe. 3. “that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” The entire Bible is ultimately about Jesus. It is God’s story of the redemption of man through His Son. Our understanding of the Bible is to lead us evermore to that conclusion. 4. “and that by believing you may have life in His name” Without this outcome, all the knowledge we have is just mental. You can know the Bible, study the Bible, even mentally assert you believe certain things, but until you experience this abundant, eternal life Christ offers, you have not properly used scripture. The Word of God is a wonderful gift. God wrote it for us. Many men and women sacrificed tremendously so we could have the Bible in our hands and in our language today. However, the bottom line is this, do you have life in Jesus Name? Do you believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who died to free you from your sin, and have you placed your active faith in Him? That is the whole purpose of scripture. Make sure you do not miss it!
