John 4:49 The official said to [Jesus], “Sir, come down before - TopicsExpress

John 4:49 The official said to [Jesus], “Sir, come down before my little boy dies.” This has to be one of the most moving lines in the gospels. The royal official is not interested in arguments; he just wants his child healed. It had been my own prayer for many years as well, having a son with a chronic illness and pain. Similar to Jesus who began to lecture the centurion, the esteemed university professor/physician lectured me on how my son could not possibly have tracheomalacia because he was chubby, and kids with such a condition were always extremely thin. I remember leaving that office determined never to return. I was not interested in a doctor who cared more about showing off his knowledge than in healing my boy. As it turned out, my son did indeed have severe tracheomalacia, subsequently diagnosed at another university on the other side of the country. With this knowledge, we were able to better manage his condition. In this story, Jesus offers a very human reaction: succumbing to a bit of pride before realizing lectures and platitudes are not of much value. In the face of need, listening and a compassionate response are required.
