John 6:52-58 Then the Jews started arguing with one another: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? they said. Jesus replied: I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate; they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever. Once again, as Jesus continues talking to the people, he is sounding more and more like a fruitcake. I cant even imagine someone today coming in and preaching this sort thing. AND.... just like then, someone would be calling the cops on him. Today, knowing what we know now and looking back, we see that Jesus was comparing his body, that would soon be beaten and crucified, to that of the manna supplied to the people in the wilderness that help sustain them.. Jesus gives us life in the midst of our own wilderness. His blood, was the final blood sacrifice that would need to be given in order that we too could have our sins forgiven. And these are the things that he taught us to remember each time we have communion. Father today we thank you for helping us to understand analogies and parables as we walk beside you. We thank you for your body that was broken so that we could live. Thank you for the blood that was shed so that we could be forgiven. Bless each one as we come to learn and acknowledge these truths..... In Jesus name...
