John 9.39-41 Common English Bible (CEB) 39 Jesus said, “I have come into the world to exercise judgment so that those who don’t see can see and those who see will become blind.” 40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard what he said and asked, “Surely we aren’t blind, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you wouldn’t have any sin, but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains. Seeing Through Our Blindness We have a tendency to prefer blindness over awareness. A good example is that most of the world knew the Holocaust was taking place but turned a blind eye. We know that children are dying by the thousands in parts of the world and yet we seem to push the facts aside and say, What can we possibly do about it? I remember an English teacher in high school who would call out certain students to read aloud even though she knew it was nearly impossible for them to do so. Did I speak up and challenge her? Of course not. I pretended not to notice and turned a blind eye to her indiscretion. I not only remember those students’ names but I also have the teacher’s name and image engraved in my mind’s eye. It seems my mind’s eye has always had 20/20 vision even while I sat blindly on the sidelines. This text from John is not nearly so much about this unnamed man who had been blind from birth as it is about me. Even though my sight is strong I have been quick to become blind. Could it be the same for you? Prayer: Lord, we go through life thinking that we can see when we are really blind. Remove the blinders from our eyes and help us walk strongly and securely in your light. Amen.
