John Benjamin Toshack remembers that in the early days, Iker Casillas, who made his debut under the Welshmans orders, things werent a bed of roses. In his first games, Toshack would think, he looks so little between those posts.... The young goalkeeper let in a fair number of goals that he should have got a hand to. But Toshack was convinced that the youngster had what it takes. He had to suffer and he was aware of that. With a keeper I couldnt do what I did with Xabi Alonso and have him play for just 30 minutes. The normal thing would have been to take him off the team a couple of weeks after and forget him. But I had no doubts, I had faith in him. Toshack is a great admirer of the Spaniard and his career: He has a spectacular trajectory, with some amazing saves, always in decisive moments, like the one against Robben... There are top goalscorers, Golden Boots, but how many points has Casillas given? How many games has he won? And above all, for how long? Its been 14 years. Thats a long career and always at the highest level. Nobody can know why he isnt playing at the moment. And looking for reasons to put him on would be kind of an affront to the other goalkeeper, who is also putting in some good performances. I think that Iker is taking it all very well. Always, when I see him as the national team captain, I remember that first day at Reals training complex. I remember it as if it were yesterday.
