John Burroughs. Considerations No.6. The Deception of Appearance. Part 2 Somehow, some way, the true phenomenon has the ability to interact directly with the consciousness of the witness. Given that, all bets are off as to being able to understand what we are dealing with by taking the appearance of it at face value. Speaking of appearance, Daniel Paces little known film The Appearence of a Man, a philosophical discussion of the lights seen down in Phoenix in March of 1997 has an alien entity that appears for all intents and purposes, human. But in the preamble, Pace notes that A thousand years ago we called them angels, now we call them aliens. The difference may only be in the deception of appearance in the mind/reality of the observer. One of the most fascinating scenes in the movie Contact developed from Carl Sagans book, is when the representative of Earth, Dr. Arroway, eventually arrives on what appears to be a sandy beach after a journey halfway across the cosmos. If you look closely, the bent palm trees on the shoreline mirror the shape of a drawing the young Arroway made as a child, which we see at the beginning of the film. Intrigued, Arroway reaches out toward the sky above and pokes a finger into the edge of her perception, causing ripples to appear in her reality, confirming that while this all seems real, it isnt, exactly, somehow, real. youtube/watch?v=fAoGSjH3lp0 Eventually a blurry form appears out of the world around her to take the shape of her dead father. Arroway realizes that Youre not real. None of this is real The intelligent entity who is her point of contact says No. We thought this might make things easier for you. Arroway wants to go farther, to see more, to have the alien intelligence reveal itself for what it is. The entity assures her shes gone far enough for the first contact. Small moves, Ellie he tells her. This is how it has been done for thousands of years. Perhaps all Jim and Col. Halt and I did in the forest that night was make a small move towards an eventual understanding. Perhaps first contact is but an enigma, designed to make us wonder and think.
