John Carlos speaks about the massacre in Tlatelolco, Mexico City, October 2, 1968, ten days before the opening olympic ceremony: John Carlos is an African American former track and field athlete and a founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights. He won the bronze medal in the 200 meters race at the 1968 Olympics. After the race, from the Olympic podium John Carlos and teammate Tommie Smith lifted black-gloved fists in a Black Power salute. The Black Power salute is widely known. But the massacre in Tlatelolco (Three Cultures Square) in Mexico City is not as well known, at least not in that part of the world that Im living in. Ten days before the opening olympic ceremony were hundreds of students killed. Memorial marches are still held every year on October 2, in Mexico City. And for me, it feels great to attend this march this year.
