John Collier was a writer of stories of the fantastc. His best known works are probably the novel, His Monkey Wife, and his short story, “Evening Primrose.” Most people probably know the latter because it was a mini-musical created for ABC Stage 67, with a book by James Goldman and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It starred Tony Perkins as a young writer hoping to get away from it all who hides out in a department store and finds a whole secret society of people living there who only come out when the store is closed (part of it was filmed on location outside Macy’s and inside Stern’s). In 1964 , Collier adapted the H.G. Wells’ short story, “The Magic Shop” for The Alfred Hitcock Hour. It starred Leslie Nielsen, the man who would be Messala (watch his screen test for Ben-Hur), and John Megna, who is probably best known for playing Dill, the Truman Capote stand-in, in To Kill a Mockingbird. Here is Collier’s adaptation of the Wells’ story in its entirety. youtube/watch?v=QHLxQnLbKwc
