John Day Interagency Fire Dispatch reports that the fire burning near Monument is at about 1,200 acres and is about 8 miles south-southwest of town in the Gilmore Creek area. It is estimated at 1,200 acres. Dozers, engines and hand crews are on the fire, and several residences in the rural area have been protected with fire lines. The fire response involves crews from several agencies, including local and rural fire departments. It is burning on private land, although BLM lands are nearby. The cause is under investigation. Air resources were dispatched to drop buckets of water and use fire retardant on the blaze this afternoon and evening.
