John Garfield, Lana Turner “The Postman Always Rings Twice” Director: Tay Garnett (1946) Great cast, great story. There have been numerous film and stage adaptations of the James M. Cain novel. I’ve seen three, favoring the 1946 version, which I’ve probably seen way too many times. I barely remember the 1981 Jack Nicholson/Jessica Lange version. Then there is Luchino Visconti’s 1943 “Ossessione,” which I only discovered a couple of years ago and now like almost as much as the 1946.
