John Hails plays John Cage ONE + ONE + FOUR + FOUR = 100 In the last fifteen years of his life, John Cage wrote a large number of beautiful pieces for various ensembles with titles that simply indicate how many players were required, for example One1 for solo piano. 2013 marked the 100th anniversary of Cage’s birth, and in celebration and as a tribute, John Hails created a performance that overlays four of these works (One1 and One5 for solo piano; Four2 for piano and ensemble; and Four6 for ensemble). The other three parts of the ensemble works have been recorded and you will hear from the loudspeakers by the piano. This is not a performance with a beginning, middle, and end. Please treat it like a painting or sculpture around which you can walk, or in front of which you can sit and meditate.The aim is to create a ‘space’ in sound that you can explore however you want.
