John Oliver spends a great deal of time in this rant skewering the for- profit education industry, so its easy to forget that hes exposing crucial flaws in the entire education system. Community colleges are strapped for cash because someone came up with the idea that affordability trumps ability. Thus, community colleges are repeatedly forced to cut back on services, forcing their students to endure waiting lists to get on waiting lists, a faculty of part-time teachers who have little too no connection to the school our its students, and an education remarkably similar to what they should have learned in high school. So is it any wonder that there is a populating of students who dont want that experience? Who actually seek out and choose a career college? The mistaken assumption people make when they hear about aggressive techniques such asfinding their pain points is that if an admissions representative succeeds, theyre pulling the student out of the community college population. Not true. A career colleges competition is: 1) other career colleges. The student had, by this time, already decided traditional college is not right for him/her. 2) that students own life situation. These students are struggling to make decisions that will change their lives, and, yes, take them out of a dead - end job at Wal-Mart. But they need that smack of real talk to wake them up to whats necessary. One thing I appreciated about Corinthians admissions process is that there was no hard talk, but there was straight talk. They spoke if achieving career goals. They discussed the Time, Energy, and Money involved in getting an education that would help them get there. And then they showed the students how it could be done at CCi. buff.ly/1y5yFQC
