Dear Organic Consumer, You are under attack. There’s just no other way to describe what powerful corporations like Monsanto and Coca-Cola, and their even-more-powerful lobbying group, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), are doing. They are attacking your health and the health of your environment. They are attacking your democratic right to pass laws to protect yourself and your community from their toxins. Please help us fight back against the GMA. Click here for details on how to donate online, by mail or by phone. The GMO labeling movement—your movement—has reached a critical crossroads. Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) have filed a lawsuit against Vermont, in the hope of overturning this country’s first stand-alone mandatory GMO labeling law. In Oregon, two counties that recently passed GMO crop bans are also potentially facing lawsuits. And citizens in Oregon will vote in November on a statewide mandatory GMO labeling law—a law we must pass in order to prove that we will not cower in the face of lawsuits by rich and powerful corporations and their lobbying groups. These battles against the industry goliaths belong to us all. If we allow the courts to overturn Vermont’s GMO labeling law, other states will be reluctant to pass labeling laws knowing that they may face long and costly court battles. If we lose in Oregon, Monsanto will flaunt our loss as a lack of consumer will. We can’t let that happen. Now, more than ever, we need your financial support to defend what we have worked so hard together to achieve. We simply cannot afford to allow the pesticide and junk food industries to obliterate our democratic right to pass state and local laws designed to protect us from corporate greed, and reckless and ruinous agricultural practices. We have pledged $500,000 to win in Oregon in November. And we have pledged whatever it takes to defend Vermont’s GMO labeling law. But we haven’t yet reached our quarterly campaign goal of $250,000. Can you help us raise another $37,000 by midnight June 30? You can donate online, or by mail or phone—click here for details. All funds raised by June 30 will go toward a legal defense fund for Vermont, or toward the campaign for a GMO labeling citizens’ initiative in Oregon. Please commit to supporting this life-saving work until we, the citizens of this earth—and the victims and potential victims of reckless and powerful corporations—successfully defend our constitutional rights in court. And until we pass more state GMO labeling laws and bans so that the right to know, and the right to ban, have been won for every consumer, and every county, in every state. Thank you! Ronnie Cummins National Director, Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund P.S. Funds donated directly to campaigns must be raised through the Organic Consumers Fund, our allied 501(c)4 lobbying arm. If you need to make a tax-deductible donation, please donate to our 501(c)3 nonprofit. Your donation will indirectly support our GMO bans and labeling law campaigns by funding our ongoing education and media work.
