John Terpak, Born on the 4th of July! You might say that barbells were his life. John Basil Terpak Sr was born on the 4th of July in Mayfield, Pennsylvania. He became interested in weightlifting as a teenager. After meeting Bob Hoffman in 1935, he became a member of the York Oil Burner Athletic Club which later became the York Barbell Club. You might say, he started off with a "bang" in weightlifting! He excelled at Olympic weightlifting and was part of nine United States Olympic Weightlifting teams. To give you an idea of the magnitude of his involvement and extraordinary ability, here a some of his accomplishments: He won eight US National Championships in the Middleweight Class from 1937 to 1942, 1944 and 1945. In 1937 he was World Weightlifting Champion in the Middleweight Class. He placed 3rd in the 1938 World Championships in the Middleweight Class. He placed 2nd in the 1946 World Championships in the Middleweight Class. He was the 1947 World Champion in the Light-Heavyweight Class. Overall, he participated in sixty consecutive National Championships and won twelve times! In addition, he was coach of the United States Olympic Weightlifting team in 1968 at Mexico City and, again, in 1972 in Munich. After a long career as the long time, well respected, business manager of York Barbell Company and raising a family, he died on June 1st 1993. Oh, and by the way, Happy 101st Birthday to John Terpak!
