John is one week post-op and recovery is going fairly well. We are dealing with a few new challenges with managing his incision and additional antibiotics, but he appears to be healing nicely. One of the hardest meds for John to tolerate is Keppra, an anti-seizure medication. He has never had a seizure and it was prescribed after the initial surgery as purely preventative. If he had a seizure without a portion of his skull attached, the outcome could have been disastrous. There are too many side effects to list, but the most important are memory loss and trouble swallowing. We left the hospital with instructions to continue with Keppra until his appointment with the plastic surgeon on November 19th. This morning, as the meds got stuck in his throat yet again, he insisted he would not take them anymore and that they were messing with his head and tearing him up all the way down to his stomach. I am fortunate enough to have been communicating with Dr. Huang’s administrative assistant since his initial surgery. I sent her an email this afternoon explaining what was happening, and within minutes she replied that Dr. Huang said he could stop them immediately. When I told John the good news I got a big hug and thank you! Spent the day running some errands together and John asked me to take him to Home Depot to look around. I could see his wheels spinning while we were looking at the ½ off trees for sale. Thankfully, he didnt buy any that surely I would have had to plant! We just got back from a 45 minute walk around the neighborhood. Tomorrow we resume speech therapy at Sinai Hospital and will get back into a normal routine. Thank you for your continued prayers and well wishes. We have so much to be thankful for as we approach the holiday season!
