Johnny Long The changing of water used to wash mens feet into wine was the first miracle Jesus ever did. I think it teaches a lesson, even if subtly so, and Ill admit straight-up I dont get it all the way. But the setting for it is significant to me in that it is a wedding. Jesus is the groom for the new Heaven and earth, even as we who believe in Him are the bride. Wine is symbolic of blood, which He shed to purchase our salvation so we COULD be His bride. Water is symbolic of the Spirit, by which we have access to Him BECAUSE of His shed blood. A common saying, even today, is blood is thicker than water, meaning blood-kinship runs deeper than any friendship can ever run. However, Jesus came to earth not to bring peace (between blood-relatives), but a sword, and ones enemies are those of his own family (see Matt. 10:34-37). This is because Jesus is God (John 10:30), the same One Who sets the solitary in families (Psalm 68:6). When He turns wash-water here into wine that is later adjudged to be, noticeably, the good wine (John 2:10), Im seeing a testimony that He can take the dirtiest parts of humanity with HIS Spirit and not only wash us clean (and thats at I Cor. 6:11), but make us into a type of blood-kinship that supercedes any other, and is noticeably the good wine of the human-race. The fact that Mary wasnt capable of seeing past her role as His momma, nor yet to the full realization of Who He was (and is) but was rather caught up in the ceremony of an earthly ritual, speax to me of Gods mercy with our human shortcomings. Outside of His mild rebuke toward her (John 2:4), her fleshly side is overlooked as being apparently harmless. It would certainly be natural for her to still, at this time, be only capable of seeing Him as her son. It would be awhile before she was able to understand because of the Truth of I Cor. 2:14, as it is for ALL humanity until we are reborn WITH such understanding (John 3:3-6).
