Johnny Manziel likely to start against the Redskins By Maurice Barksdale 7hours(August 10) ago, 2014 The Washington Redskins will take on the Cleveland Browns at home in their next preseason game. It will be on Monday night, August 18th on ESPN and Browns first round draft pick, Johnny Manziel, will likely be starting at quarterback. Manziel saw his first action of the season Saturday night against the Detroit Lions, and went 7/11 for 63 yards passing and he also rushed for 27 yards. The Cleveland Browns new offensive coordinator is Kyle Shanahan who recently held the same position for the Redskins up until last season. So the Redskins should have some familiarity with what he will want to do with Manziel in the lineup. As Manziel is a mobile quarterback with similar skills as Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III. Manziel is competing to be the starting quarterback in Cleveland against their starter from last season Brian Hoyer. Hoyer started against the Lions, so Manziel will likely start the next game. Manziel has been criticized this offseason for partying too much and creating the impression that he wasn’t taking his task of becoming the starter for the Browns seriously enough. But he will get a chance to prove himself against the Redskins who have experience practicing against a mobile quarterback in RGIII. However, Manziel is learning a pro offense for the first time and he may struggle some but he’s also an intriguing talent. And it will be interesting to see if he can have some success against the Redskins defense. _________________________________________________ Redskins sign safety Cromartie-Smith, cut corner Thompson By Maurice Barksdale 21hours ago, 2014 The Washington Redskins have signed free agent safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith. This move comes as the Redskins also announced they have waived cornerback Peyton Thompson. Thompson was signed to the Redskins practice squad late last season in November 2013 and had an up hill climb to make the roster this year. By the Redskins releasing Peyton Thompson now, he at least has a chance to sign on with another team while training camps are still ongoing. Safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and has been off and on with them since then. He was last with the Steelers last season before being released. He has experience in a 3-4 defense with Pittsburgh, and will provide the Redskins with more competition at safety, and more than likely on special teams. Redskins starting free safety Ryan Clark did not play in the preseason debut win over the New England Patriots, and neither did safety Phillip Thomas. Both players were out with hamstring issues. The Redskins started Bacarri Rambo in place of Ryan Clark against the Patriots, and the Redskins may just need to add more depth at safety until those players are healthy enough to return to practice or are ready to play.
