Johor to build more affordable housing Jun 3, 2013 - By Farah Wahida: The Johor government plans to develop more low-cost houses in the next five years, to enable more Malaysians to have their own property, reported The Star. “We are looking at ongoing and future housing projects on government land in order to build more affordable homes to cater to the lower and medium-income earners,” according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The government is well aware that people need affordable housing. Thus, it will prioritise this matter in its five-year plan. Measures to be undertaken include strict enforcement of the 35 percent affordable housing quota for developers. “We will not compromise on the 35 percent quota that is set for housing developers and we will not give any exception to any developers on the matter,” he said. Apart from Johor’s higher property prices, rents and cost of living, especially in Johor Bahru, are also on the rise. “We also cannot run from the fact that people from neighbouring countries with higher currency exchange are coming into Johor Bahru to invest and spend, but the question is how can we exploit those opportunities to our advantage,” he asked.
