Join Heritage Outbound Winter Adventure BISMARCK – The 2014 Heritage Outbound Winter Adventure, an annual day of activities and learning at Fort Clark State Historic Site and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014. The cost is $65, including meals and snacks. The event is open to the public, and preregistration is required. Register online at heritageout2014.eventbrite. The day begins with snowshoeing at Fort Clark State Historic Site. Participants should arrive at the parking lot before 10:15 a.m. Central Time. There will also be a discussion covering historic maps of the area; how the Missouri River has changed its course, and recent archaeological work conducted in summer 2012. Participants will then travel to Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, just north of Stanton, ND. The Heritage Outbound Winter Adventure will continue with a shared meal at the Knife River Indian Villages Visitor Center. Participants will spend the afternoon snowshoeing the trails through the Hidatsa villages with State Historical Society of North Dakota staff Erik Holland and Timothy Reed, and John Hoganson of the North Dakota Geological Survey. The group will visit Awaitixa Xi=e, or Lower Hidatsa Village, and Awatixa, also known as Sakakawea Village, and will learn about Hidatsa village life and the Knife and Missouri rivers through the lenses of archaeology, geology, history and oral tradition. Participants will learn ancient skills including striking flint to steel to create sparks for kindling fires, using atlatls to throw spears at buffalo targets, and using ice gliders in a winter game. “Warm up with hot chocolate while learning about earthlodge life by investigating objects in the interpretive center exhibits before experiencing an evening in the earthlodge around a crackling fire,” said Holland. “This will be an unforgettable evening.” Participants will also enjoy a traditional feast with Cory Spotted Bear discussing traditional hunting practices used by the Mandans, and Matt Schanandore playing American Indian flute music. This outdoor program requires moderate physical activity and is recommended for ages 12 years and older. Participants are responsible for their own warm clothing.
