Join Us in the Olive Ribbon project: The Olive Ribbon was developed as an expression of solidarity with Arab & Muslim communities, created in response to racially based misinformation and attacks individuals and communities across Sydney. The Olive Ribbon initiative is a partnership with Western Sydney Community Forum, Arab Council Australia, United Muslim Women’s Association and Sydney Alliance, to enable our members and friends to demonstrate our unity. Our message is ‘Our diversity makes us stronger and richer and we will stand together – hurt one of us and you hurt us all’’ Wearing an Olive Ribbon is a simple way to express our solidarity and to start a conversation about our desire to be a united nation, not one that positions any community as ‘other’. We are encouraging organisations to use it to commence some local conversations, possibly bringing in other partners to assist and & grow the campaign locally in whatever way suits your community. Organisation might simply purchase olive ribbon & pins from ‘Spotlight’ or another such store and hold a ‘ribbon making party’ or assemble ribbons at a staff meeting. Each ribbon is distributed with a card with the message below, or something similar. This ribbon symbolises our living and working together peacefully and respectfully, inclusive of people of all ethnicities and faiths or none. We pledge not to position any community as ‘the other’. We are one Australia which will not be divided. Our diversity makes us stronger and richer and we will stand together – hurt one of us and you hurt us all. Many groups have taken this projects as their own method of anti-racism work. • Woodville Community Services just held a ribbon making afternoon tea in December with speakers (see photo), now each of the 50 participants is taking ribbons out to others; • Unions NSW held a meeting of 50 union leaders who will take the ribbons to their members. • Many workers are adapting the above message as part of their email signature below as part of this project • Groups are thinking of ways to use the initiative in their Harmony day events.
