Mass movements in Brazil and Indonesia protested against the destruction of virgin forests and the forced eviction of hundreds of thousands of indigenous peoples to make way for Bank-funded roads and dams. These movements helped win critical protections enshrined in the World Bank “Safeguard Policies.” These protections are now under severe threat.
