Join us Today and Tomorrow for the 24th Annual Classic & Wooden Boat Festival! There will be plenty more than just the dozens of classic boats at the Door County Maritime Museum when it hosts its 24th Annual Classic & Wooden Boat Festival August 2-3 at the museum in Sturgeon Bay. Sharing the spotlight with all the finely crafted vessels from sail and runabouts to kayaks and canoes are the unique and creative Sikaflex vessels which always draw a crowd. Meanwhile, “Paint the Bay” plein air artists will dot the surrounding area Saturday morning and their work on display in the museum throughout the remainder of the weekend. Again, the United States Coast Guard will be well represented with the return appearance of “Coastie,” the remote-controlled boat. Some of the Coast Guard’s most eye-catching equipment will also be on hand. In addition to “Coastie,” a variety of other children’s attractions will take place from the toy boat building kits to the mini-tug races. “Bob the Parrot” is also back after a successful appearance last year as he lit up social media with the remarkable photo opportunities he presents. Boats will be exhibited throughout the grounds with trailered vessels on the western side of the museum. Small craft will fill the green space immediately to the north of museum adjacent to the in-water vessels. Festival attendees will again get an opportunity to vote for a People’s Choice winner Saturday while the museum’s judging panel will choose its slate of winners in a number of categories. There is also the unusual, such as one of the few remaining “Amphicars” in the United States. Adding some spice to the boat show component of the festival is a special award in the runabout category sponsored by Rummele’s Jewelry Boutique in Fish Creek, which through Swiss watchmaker Frederique Constant, is offering a stunning watch from its “Runabout” collection to the judged winner. Sikaflex boat construction gets underway Saturday morning at 10 am with two-person teams required to build a boat with limited materials and just four hours to do it in order to garner points to carry over into Sunday’s in-water race. Always a big draw, the race will begin at 12:30pm with the colorfully decorated vessels hitting the water and racing against the clock. Points are awarded and coupled with Saturday’s construction totals to produce an overall winner. There is voting Sunday morning for a People’s Choice award and a coveted spot on the Palmer Johnson Trophy. Palmer Johnson, one of this year’s sponsors for the event, designed and crafted the trophy to entice more creative design and colorful themes into the event. “Paint the Bay” will encompass the entire Sturgeon Bay waterfront. Artists will have Saturday morning to create their art before returning it for a silent auction inside the museum Saturday afternoon and Sunday. A People’s Choice vote will select the work, which will grace the 2015 festival poster. Registration forms for artists are available online at dcmm.org or on the festival grounds from 8-9am Saturday morning. For the first time, cash awards are being presented in the show. In addition to access to the festival grounds, the admission price also includes access to the museum and its popular “Pirates: Ship to Shore” exhibit and four other galleries filled with Great Lakes maritime history. The restored 149-foot tug John Purves remains a prominent attraction with deck tours again part of the festival admission. The Festival Committee has a single ticket entry structure with significantly discounted children’s admission prices to encourage more family attendance. Of course, the concessions stand is back with a full menu including a freshly caught whitefish sandwich. In addition to Palmer Johnson and Rummele’s, other principle sponsors for this year’s festival are Hacker-Craft, one of which will be on exhibit by a local owner, and CenterPointe Marina which will have a vessel on display. doorcountytoday/article-21027-24th-annual-classic-wooden-boat-festival.html
