Join us at 4pm TODAY for the EAPS Department Lecture Series featuring: Erik Hauri | Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington Water in the Moon’s Interior: Truth and Consequences 4PM, Bldg. 54-915; Pre-lecture reception at 3:45 Abstract: The Moon has long been known to be depleted in volatile elements compared with the Earth, but in 2008 this notion was challenged by the discovery of magmatic water in lunar volcanic glass returned by Apollo 15 and 17. The first measurements of water in lunar melt inclusions in 2011 upped the ante further, with the suggestion that parts of the Moon’s interior contained as much water as the Earth’s upper mantle. This lecture will present the truth about how these measurements are done, the kinds of samples that retain direct information on lunar water, and what the data mean for the distribution of water in the Moon’s interior. The consequences for the origin and evolution of the Moon will then be discussed.
