Join us on April 9 for Australia’s First Year on the Security Council: Was it worth it? What have we achieved? With Professor John Langmore, from the Melbourne School of Government at the University of Melbourne. Details here: internationalaffairs.org.au/events/australias-first-year-on-the-security-council-was-it-worth-it-what-have-we-achieved/ About the event: As the pre-eminent authority of the United Nations, the Security Council is responsible for international peace and security. Australia’s election as a non-permanent member seemed to indicate a new era of international influence for our nation. However, how much influence does Australia actually wield? What are the constraints on the influence of elected members? Is the Security Council still effective at all? Just over a year into its two-year term, Australia and the other Security Council members have had no shortage of issues to deal with. From the crises in Egypt, Syria and the South and East China Seas, new challenges from Mali, the Central African Republic, Venezuela and now the Ukraine all require attention. It is with pleasure that we welcome Professor John Langmore, from the Melbourne School of Government at the University of Melbourne, to discuss Australia and the UN Security Council. John will discuss both the constraints non-permanent members face, as well as the opportunities available to them. Crucially, John will use Australia’s experiences to discuss the potential for reforming the UN Security Council, and what such reform might look like. This promises to be a thought provoking event for all interested in the transformation of international relations in the modern world. John Langmore is a Professorial Fellow and Assistant Director Research (Security and Political Engagement) at the Melbourne School of Government in the University of Melbourne. John is a former Member of Parliament and he worked in the UN from 1996 to 2003. Please book at least one day before if you plan to attend this event. Pre-payment welcome or payment at the door. Members $20 student members $10 Non-members $30 student non-members $15
