Join us on the morning of Saturday, May 17, for another Saturday History Lecture in the barn at the Republic of Texas Plaza Park 5117 North Main Street. San Jacinto history is always a popular subject, especially with its proximity to the Baytown area, and Janet K. Wagner, chairman of the Harris County Historical Commission, will speak on “The skirmish before The Battle: April 20, 1836.” Janet’s deep interest in Texas history dovetails right into her firm, J. K. Wagner & Co., which specializes in unearthing historic and archeological information. A graduate of Texas A&M University, she is also a Texas registered landscape architect. Her activities include historic land use analysis, and she has worked on projects for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as for the City of Houston and Harris County, and out-of-state projects. Her work takes her to historic cemeteries and other sites, as well as to courthouses and other repositories to search through the “dusty old records.” In addition, you can hear live music presented by Chuck Chandler who regularly appears at BHPA functions. Playing the fiddle and the banjo, Chuck plays music from the 1750s and 1860s, and some of the music dates from the 1600s English ballads to the early 1900s string band music which is still played in the Appalachian region of the eastern states today. The program will begin at 10 a.m., but attendees are invited to arrive at 9:30 a.m. for a time of fellowship and listen to Chuck’s music. While the event is free, an RSVP is requested by email to [email protected] or by calling 281.421.2099 (be sure to leave your name, phone number, and number attending). Chuck will also offer live music following the program, and the historic buildings will be open for free tours.
