Tuesday, Oct 8 – Disintegration: The Splintering of Black America by Eugene Robinson (2011) The author, a Pulitzer-‐prize winning journalist and poliCcal commentator who grew up in the segregated South, believes that the “race-‐based community” that was the backdrop of his racial experience is no longer a reality. Instead, Black America has split into four subgroups: elite; mainstream middleclass; an “emergent” community of mixed-‐race families and black immigrants; and an underclass he calls “abandoned.” He argues that the four groups have very different issues and concerns and that it is critical that significant steps be taken to address the needs of the “abandoned” group. This book is said to change the way we look at what we thought we already knew. (254 pp.)
